What we do

Technology enabled lives project

Overview

We aim to improve the delivery of technology enabled care (TEC) across Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire. We are exploring how TEC can be used to help people live more safely and independently at home for longer, and reduce the number of hospital admissions.

We are also exploring the use of TEC for younger people; people with learning or physical impairments; people with mental health conditions; and children with special education needs

What is technology enabled care (TEC)?

TEC devices help people to live securely, and are used in a range of care settings including care homes; private homes; and respite care. Some TEC devices commonly in use include:

  • telecare alarms and pendants
  • bed occupancy sensors
  • door sensors
  • medication management devices
  • fall detectors
  • motion activated (PIR) lights
  • remote monitoring systems
What are the benefits for general practice?
  • home medical devices, such as blood pressure monitors, can help efficiently manage long-term or chronic health conditions, reducing the need for medical appointments
  • monitoring systems can highlight potential issues earlier and reduce the need for urgent primary care or hospitalisation
  • medication reminders and dispensers help patients stick to their medication plans, reducing missed or duplicate doses
  • digital appointment booking and test results can save practices time and resources. Patient records can also be easily shared saving time at consultations
  • virtual consultations, virtual wards, and remote monitoring can increase access to healthcare, particularly for patients in remote areas
Creating a consistent BNSSG approach for TEC

The delivery of TEC varies between authorities, depending on population demographics, and the range of products and services available. To help everyone delivering and using TEC, our project will develop a cohesive framework for all care commissioners and providers, ensuring a more uniform approach across BNSSG.

To achieve this we are working with TEC providers across the region to understand how TEC is currently delivered, and the challenges and opportunities. We will also explore the role of general practice in the referral pathway and wider TEC delivery
